Having launched on 18 January 2023, galaxus.it has wrapped up its first month – time to take stock of the first set of results. We were keen to find out where we sent our first Italian parcel, what our Italy-based customers are buying and when they’re shopping.
«Launch day went off without a hitch. Just after 8 a.m. we had our first customers browsing galaxus.it from Italy,» says Christian Stihl, Senior Business Developer at Galaxus. Galaxus saw its strongest start near its Swiss motherland, with Milan and Genoa combined accounting for almost a third of page views. Customers based in northern Italy tended to visit our online shop slightly more – our most northerly order was placed in Brixen, South Tyrol. However, Galaxus is also striking a chord further south, with almost 11 per cent of all browsing sessions taking place in Rome.
Our signature brown packages also hit the high seas. Most of our Sicilian orders came in from Palermo and Catania, while in Sardinia, the bulk of our orders were placed in Cagliari. Harry Potter journeyed furthest south – to Avola, Sicily. By the way, the very first of our Italian parcels went to Filadelfia in the region of Calabria. Our first customer’s Minion Lego set was packaged and sent off from Krefeld within an hour.
Orders are coming in for products across our range. Italy-based customers’ favourite products by far are consumer electronics such as smartphones, laptops and hobs. Lego sets and rechargeable drill batteries also frequently make their way into Italian shopping carts. As for what our customers in Italy are looking for, «iPhone», «ps5» and «Lego» proved to be the most frequently searched terms on our home page.
Most users are aged 25–34, closely followed by the 35–45 age group, while the 45–54 cohort took third place. Neither younger nor older age groups seem to have discovered Galaxus yet. As for gender, 67 per cent of our customers are male, while 33 per cent are male.
Customers in Italy prefer shopping on their owns, with almost two thirds of orders placed via mobile.
The most popular weekday to browse the Galaxus site during its first 30 days was Wednesday, with online shoppers at their most active from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday afternoons from 2 to 3 p.m. also proved to be a popular shopping time slot during the first month. Traffic was at its lowest on Sundays, when a slap-up meal at grandma’s was more important than browsing galaxus.it.
The Community’s reaction to the Galaxus launch in Italy was mixed, but largely positive. Many of the comments mentioned our use of automatic translation. User «matiost» wants to see Italian translations done by humans, not machines.
«Risoldi» remarks even more pointedly that Italian-language product descriptions need to be improved because automatic translations get you «lynched» in Italy.
Another user quipped: «Congratulations, I’ll spread the news in Italy. Just don’t make me look bad.» We’ll keep on doing our best!
