Apple expands Self Service Repair
You can now also repair Apple devices yourself in Switzerland using original parts. In addition, the "Apple Diagnostics" software will be available for private individuals - initially in the USA and next year in Europe.
With Apple's Self Service Repair (SSR) programme, iPhones and Macs can be repaired at home. Apple is now expanding the programme to 24 additional European countries - including Switzerland. The iPhone 15 and Macs with M2 chips are now also supported. In total, SSR is now available for 35 products in 33 countries and 24 languages. The iPhone manufacturer writes this in a press release.
An additional innovation: Apple is now making the Apple Diagnostics software available to private individuals in the USA. This allows devices to be checked for faults. If something is broken, the tool provides information on repair options and the necessary materials. The tool will be available in Europe next year.
Only intended for experienced people
Apple's SSR was announced two years ago and rolled out in the USA in April 2022. Eight European countries were added a year ago, including Germany, Italy and France. The programme is aimed at a niche audience of "tech-savvy individuals who have the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices". For the general public, Apple continues to recommend repairs by specialists.
If you want to try it yourself, you can order original parts and hire tools from the Self Service Repair Store. You will also receive detailed instructions. However, repairing it yourself is neither particularly cheap nor easy: to replace a battery in the iPhone 13 Mini, for example, a journalist in the USA was supplied with two suitcases of material. The cost was 49 US dollars for the hire of the tool and 69 US dollars for the replacement battery. The repair price in the Apple Store is according to the official website only 89 US dollars.
According to Apple, the most common repairs are batteries and displays. However, it is also possible to replace camera modules or speakers, for example. The prices in Switzerland are not yet known at the time of publication of this article. However, they should be available on Apple's website soon.
