Canon launches 200-800mm super telephoto and two other lenses

Two lenses for the full-frame format and one for the smaller APS-C format will expand the selection for Canon mirrorless cameras by the end of the year.

Shortly after the 10-20mm-wide-angle-lens, Canon announces another three lenses. They cater for very different needs and budgets. The only thing they have in common is that they will all be available from December 2023.

Canon 200-800mm: affordable super telephoto

This very powerful telephoto zoom is primarily intended for wildlife and sports photography.
The speed of f/6.3-9 is not particularly high. On the other hand, the new lens is quite light: around two kilograms is not much for a gun with this focal length. Sports and wildlife photographers are therefore more mobile. In addition, the lens - unlike fast models with 800 mm - does not cost a fortune. Canon has already proven with the 800mm f/11 that not using a high speed works in principle. This is even less fast.

According to Canon, the built-in image stabiliser compensates for up to 5.5 stops of exposure. The 1.4x and 2x extenders are compatible with the lens. It is not an L lens. You can recognise this not by the white colour, but by the red ring. However, according to Canon, dust and splash protection are L-level. The recommended retail price is 2299 francs for Switzerland and 2499 euros for Germany and Austria.

Canon 24-105mm: f/2.8 throughout and suitable for video

Canon is going in exactly the opposite direction with the new 24-105mm lens: high speed, but heavy and expensive. The lens offers a constant aperture of f/2.8 across the entire zoom range, which is not the only reason why it is said to be equally suitable for photos and videos. The image stabiliser, which compensates for up to 5.5 stops of exposure, also contributes to this. As does the minimal focus breathing, according to Canon. The lens has a manual aperture ring that can be adjusted in 1/32 stops - another feature for video. A power zoom adapter is available as an option, which allows motorised and therefore smooth zooming. The focus remains at the same point (parfocal zooming). The RRP is 3299 francs and 3599 euros respectively.

Canon RF-S 10-18mm: more options for the smaller format

Canon is also launching an ultra-wide-angle zoom for cameras with a smaller APS-C sensor. We are talking here about EOS R cameras such as the R7, R10 or R50. There will be no more new products for the other EOS M systems and SLR cameras.

There are only three RF-S lenses so far; this one is the fourth and a welcome addition. The new 10-18mm has a built-in image stabiliser which, according to the manufacturer, compensates for four exposure levels. Together with any stabiliser in the camera, it compensates for six exposure levels. The speed ranges from f/4.5 to f/6.3. The lens weighs around 150 grams. The RRP is 369 francs or 399 euros.
