Gorilla Glass Victus 2: Adapted for larger and heavier smartphones
Corning has introduced Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The manufacturer has adapted the new version of the scratch-resistant and robust glass to the current smartphone dimensions.
The scratch resistance of Gorilla Glass Victus 2 remains unchanged compared to its predecessor. But the stability in case of falls on concrete is supposed to be higher. According to Corning, smartphones land on precisely this material in about 30 per cent of cases. That is why the company has placed a focus on this in its development.
Concrete as a challenge for increasingly heavy smartphones
Like the Gorilla Glass Victus from 2020, the new Victus 2 is supposed to withstand drops from a height of up to two metres onto solid but not very hard surfaces. This includes asphalt, for example. There will be improvements for harder materials such as concrete. Here Victus 2 is supposed to withstand falls from up to one metre. That may not do you any good if your smartphone slips out of your hands in front of your face. But it will if it slips out of your pocket. Moreover, according to Corning, competitor products can withstand a maximum of 50 centimetres in concrete. The scratch resistance is said to remain unchanged compared to the first Victus glass. In the past, Corning has also traded resistance to scratches in favour of greater shatter resistance.
All data on drop height comes from laboratory tests - otherwise they would not be comparable. In reality, other factors such as stones lying around can have a negative influence. So it still makes sense not to lose your smartphone to gravity.
Gorilla Glass Victus 2 had become necessary because smartphones have become 15 per cent heavier and ten per cent larger compared to four years ago. Above all, the greater weight means that they impact with more force. This means that the glass has to become more robust in order to withstand the same drop height.
Can be installed from 2023
According to Corning, smartphone manufacturers will be able to install Gorilla Glass Victus 2 from 2023. Samsung's Galaxy S23, for example, which is rumoured to be unveiled in February, could become the first model to feature the new glass.
