Is the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 expensive or too expensive?
The second card in the RTX-40 series is simply too expensive for many testers. This is despite the fact that it offers up to 20 per cent more performance than the flagship of the previous series.
The RTX 4080 is a good graphics card, the various reviews agree. It is perfect for gaming in UHD (3840 × 2160 pixels) or WQHD resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels). In the higher resolution, it consistently delivers frame rates of over 60 frames per second at high settings. However, the card is too expensive for gaming in Full HD. The price seems to be the RTX 4080's problem in general.
Computerbase
The German online magazine Computerbase writes that the RTX 4080 delivers 18 percent more performance in UHD than the RTX 3090 Ti. This is in classic rasterizer games. With ray tracing, the performance increase is 20 percent. Compared to its direct predecessor, the RTX 3080, the performance increase is 50 per cent in rasteriser games and 66 per cent in ray tracing games.
The card also delivers a performance increase of 50 per cent in UHD and 66 per cent in ray tracing games.
The card is also energy-efficient. It never needs the allowed 320 watts. It rarely needs more than 300 watts, according to Computerbase. The RTX 4080 delivers more FPS per watt than the RTX 4090 and is 70 per cent more efficient than the previous generation.
However, the RTX 4080 is also more energy efficient than the previous generation.
However, the performance of the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 is further apart than the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090, but price-wise the new models are closer. The RTX 4080 is significantly more expensive compared to the RTX 3080.
Whether the RTX 4080 is simply expensive or too expensive cannot yet be judged, says Computerbase. That will only become clear when AMD comes out with the new Radeon RX 7900 XTX.
Techpowerup
The English-language site Techpowerup comes to similar conclusions. In their test games, the performance increase compared to the RTX 3090 Ti is 16 per cent and to the 3080 49 per cent. AMD's current flagship, the Radeon RX 6950 XT is 25 per cent behind the RTX 4080, while next month's Radeon RX 7900 XTX is said to be between the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 in terms of performance in Rasterizer games.
Techpowerup believes the card is also suitable for UHD. However, it is ingenious for WQHD. Here, frame rates of over 140 FPS are the order of the day. Therefore, it is suitable for high refresh gaming in this resolution. For Full HD, however, it is overdimensioned, as the CPU becomes the bottleneck.
The review particularly highlights the possibilities of the new DLSS 3 upscaling technology. This converts a lower, native resolution into a higher one. The feature works excellently.
The RTX 4080 is the most energy-efficient graphics card ever. But the card's price is likely to stand in the way of its success. Compared to the AMD graphics cards coming out next month, DLSS 3 in particular is an important selling point. The RTX 4080 is also likely to outperform the RX 7900 XTX in ray-tracing games.
The reviews agree on another point: If you can wait until the release of the new AMD graphics cards, you should. They might offer you the better price-performance package than the Nvidia cards. <p
