New Dyson hair dryer: "Intelligent" sensor technology promises better protection for the scalp

The "Nural" sensor technology is designed to enable intelligent drying of all hair types without heat damage. The "Supersonic Nural" from Dyson will be available on the market from May 2024.
The new "Supersonic Nural" hairdryer was unveiled this week at a launch event organised by Dyson in Seoul, South Korea. Thanks to the "Nural" sensor technology, it is designed to better protect the scalp while enhancing the natural shine of the hair. Company founder and chief engineer James Dyson emphasises the importance of limiting heat damage: "If you manage to limit heat damage, you're not only protecting your scalp, you're also enhancing your hair's natural shine." The hairdryer is due to be launched in May. According to our buyers, it will also be available in our range. My colleague Natalie will then test the product for you in a timely manner.
The Dyson "Supersonic Nural" has a time-of-flight sensor that recognises the distance to the head and adjusts the heat to prevent heat damage to the scalp and hair. The capsule lighting also adapts dynamically to the heat development: In scalp protection mode, the colour of the LEDs automatically changes between yellow (for low heat), orange (for medium heat) and red (for high heat) depending on how far the device is from the head.
Automatic attachment recognition
In addition, the "Nural" sensors automatically recognise the selected attachments and adjust the heat development accordingly. The attachment recognition is designed to make the styling routine easier by adapting to your personal preferences and automatically saving the last settings used
New attachment for curls and waves
In addition to protecting the scalp, the hairdryer is said to offer various attachments for all hair types. These include the new "Wave+Curl Diffuser", which according to Dyson has been specially developed for curls and waves. It has two modes and is designed to help differentiate between different hair textures and shape them accordingly. In dome mode, the generous dome shape of the attachment directs the airflow away from the scalp, which, according to the manufacturer, results in smooth, elongated waves with rounded ends. In diffuse mode, on the other hand, the serrated attachment directs the air deep to the roots of the hair, creating defined, voluminous curls.
Other attachments are:
- Attachment for gentle airflow
- Styling nozzle
- Comb attachment with wide teeth
- Flyaway attachment
In terms of design, Dyson relies on a transparent end cap, which is intended to reveal the built-in technology, and two colour variants: Ceramic Patina/Topaz and Violet Blue/Topaz. The Dyson "Supersonic Nural" is supplied with the five attachments in a storage box. Further separate accessories will follow at a later date. Dyson has not yet responded to an enquiry as to whether the existing attachments of the previously available "Supersonic" are compatible with the new "Supersonic Nural".
Update: Compatibility with old attachments
Dyson has now responded to my enquiry. The "Supersonic Nural" is the same size as the previous "Supersonic". Accordingly, most of the existing attachments should also be compatible with the new "Supersonic Nural". The exceptions are the existing flyaway attachment and the comb attachment with wide teeth.
