Quick Share: Google renames Nearby Share
Google is rebranding its service for wireless file sharing between devices. Nearby Share becomes Quick Share.
Quick Share is coming to all Android devices. Google also wants to convince PC manufacturers to install the tool on Windows in advance. There will also be news for Chromecast and Google Home at CES 2024
Quick Share to become standard on Windows too
If the name Quick Share sounds familiar to you, this is already the name of Samsung's tool that connects Galaxy devices with Windows. Google employees with the South Koreans and is therefore allowed to use the name. However, the fact that Quick Share can do more on Samsung smartphones and tablets than on those from other manufacturers could cause confusion. There it remains a function for wireless file exchange.
Nearby Share has also been available for Windows since July 2023. This is not set to change with Quick Share. Google is even planning to make it a standard app on Windows. Discussions are underway with PC manufacturers. In addition to Samsung, LG is also mentioned by name.
Google wants to bring Quick Share to Android devices that already support the predecessor Nearby Share from February 2024 via a software update. These are all devices running at least Android 6.0. At least Windows 10 is required for use on the PC.
Tiktok goes Chromecast
Google also made further announcements at the CES in Las Vegas
From February 2024, "Fast Pair" will be extended to Chromecast and Google TV. This means it will be easier to connect headphones to televisions and streaming devices.
Google is also expanding the possible uses of Chromecast - on both the transmitter and receiver side. For example, content can now be transmitted from Tiktok to other screens via Chromecast. On the other hand, LG, for example, is integrating Chromecast into its televisions for hotels and hospitals from this year onwards.
In the smarthome sector, Google is using the Matter standard to expand "selected" Google TV and Android TV devices into hubs for Google Home.
