The biggest winners and most spectacular trailers of the Game Awards 2024
At the Game Awards, not only are many prizes awarded, but also lots of games are announced. Here you can find the biggest winners and losers as well as all the spectacular trailers from the show.
The Game Awards took place in Los Angeles on Thursday night for the eleventh time. The prestigious event honoured the best games of the year in a total of 30 categories. There were also many new game trailers and surprising (!) new announcements to marvel at.
These are the biggest winners and losers
The "Game of the Year" is "Astrobot" from the Japanese Asobi Studio. The platformer was able to prevail against strong competition in the most important category of the evening. Also nominated were: "Balatro", "Black Myth Wukong", "Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree", "Final Fantasy VII Rebirth" and "Metaphor: ReFantazio". In addition to the main prize, "Astro Bot" also took home the awards for "Best Game Direction", "Best Action Adventure" and "Best Family Game". The game was nominated in a total of seven categories.
The card game "Balatro" also won. The game, produced by solo developer LocalThunk, took home three awards: "Best Independent Game", "Debut Indie Game" and "Best Mobile Game".
The JRPG "Metaphor ReFantazio" also came out on top in three categories, making it one of the biggest winners of the evening: "Best Art Direction", "Best Narrative" and "Best Role Playing Game".
The studios behind "Helldivers 2" and "Black Myth Wukong" can also be satisfied. Both games earned two awards each ("Best Ongoing Game" and "Best Multiplayer", and "Best Action" and "Player's Voice" respectively).
The evening was a bitter one for the Polish developer studio Bloober Team and "Silent Hill 2". The remake of the horror classic was nominated in four categories and failed to win a single award. "Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree" also came away empty-handed despite three nominations. "Final Fantasy VII Rebirth" only made it to one award ("Best Audio") despite seven nominations.
You can find a list of all the winners on the Game Awards website.
These new games were announced
At the eleventh edition of the Game Awards, more new games were announced than has been the case for a long time. Below you will find an overview of all the announcements and trailers. There are also some huge surprises among them.
"Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet"
The big highlight of the announcements was the new game from Playstation studio Naughty Dog ("Uncharted", "The Last of Us"). It is a completely new franchise in a sci-fi setting. "Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet" has been in development since 2020. You play a bounty hunter who is stranded on an alien planet. The studio doesn't want to reveal any more. Studio boss Neil Druckmann ("The Last of Us") is once again directing. The lead role is played by Tati Gabrielle, who already had a part in the "Uncharted" film. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross from Nine Inch Nails are responsible for the soundtrack.
Will be released sometime for PS5.
"The Witcher IV"
Developer studio CD Projekt Red has just announced that the next "Witcher" game is in "full production". Now the first CG trailer has been unveiled at the Game Awards. In "The Witcher IV", it is no longer Geralt but Ciri who plays the leading role. It is the beginning of a new "Witcher" saga with several games. The trailer suggests that Geralt will at least appear in the new trilogy. The fact that the trailer was created using Unreal Engine 5 on an as yet unannounced Nvidia GPU is also exciting.
