The hippopotamus is a large semi-aquatic mammal that can wallow in the rivers and lakes of sub-Saharan Africa. Despite its appearance, the hippopotamus is actually considered to be most closely related to whales, as it is believed that the two share a common ancestor that existed about 54 million years ago.
