Around the year 1600, the art of silhouette cutting arrived in Central Europe after a 400-year journey from its homeland China, passing through Indonesia, Persia, and the Balkans.
Johann Jakob Hauswirt is considered the father of Swiss silhouette cutting, having begun in the first half of the 19th century to create beautiful alpine ascents and collages from everyday life. This ancient art is still widely practiced in the country today and has evolved in themes and techniques. Our puzzle features a silhouette created by Jolanda Brändle from Mosnang.
