Hippopotamuses are large, heavy herbivores that live in Africa near rivers and lakes. The calves are often born in the water and are frequently nursed underwater. At birth, like the baby hippopotamus from Schleich Wild Life, they already have strong legs and can walk shortly after. After a few weeks, the impressive tusk-like canine teeth of these mammals begin to grow. Hippopotamuses are not good swimmers, but they spend almost their entire lives in the water.
